Fused Deposition Modeling (FDMAS)

This site estimates strength of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) parts based on process parameters, and links designers and manufacturers who used FDM machines.

Stratasys' FDM is one of the most popular RP systems that can fabricate prototypes out of plastic materials. Parts made from FDM are often used as load-carrying component as well as physical mockup. Because FDM deposits materials in about 0.3mm thin filament with designated orientation, parts made from FDM show anisotropic material properties.

This site provides an analytic model to predict the tensile strength of FDM parts applying the Classical Lamination Theory, which was developed for laminated composite materials. The code considered FDM parts as an anisotropic plate, and Tsai-Wu failure criterion predicts the failure of given FDM layers. The tensile strengths predicted by the analytic model were compared and agreed well with experimental data.
